Spam Soap Reporting

Posted 2004-11-05 12:18 PM in XML | Web Services.

This is getting a little out of hand. However, having the SPAM caught (via MX record) via SpamSoap.com BEFORE it gets to my Inbox helps. Sheesh, between BitTorrent (now 35% of the Internet’s (or Internets’ - depending on your political persuasion)) traffic, and SPAM, I’m amazed we have any traffic left.

At least there's hope as Jeremy Jaynes got 9 years for SPAMming.

Why's so much? Is that common? Jack

While its good to see that spamers are being punished, don't you think forcing someone to spend entire decade of his life in prison is taking it too far? I don't think anything more than 4 years would be reasonable punishment to any type of spammers. Aron Swartz notes that you can be fined 1.5 million if you had shared a TV show to 10 people on p2p. There are extreme panelties under DCMA and Patriot acts that sometime even puts middle-east to a shame. Its sad to see America impossing middle-east like outrageous penalties for relatively less intense "crimes". Middle-east can soo claim to be more civilized nations soon now that we have got Bush back ;)

Do you had to deal with average 250 messages a day? That's still a lot.

Shital,

That spammer made something like $25 million off spamming. Do you think a big fine would wake him up? Not likely they could impose THAT big a fine. Maybe taking ALL of his money would upset him but at the rate he makes money spamming I bet he'd go right back to it.

Losing a decade of his life will likely guarantee that he won't go back to spamming when he gets out. He's got to be made to understand that wasting other people's time (and business' money) for personal profit carries a stiff penalty.

What would his sentence be if he had stolen $25M outright? That's basically what he did by decreasing employee productivity.

Do the math, I'm dealing with almsot 5000 SPAM a day, and I'm NOT changing my email address! :)

Well, such a severe jail term for a crime that doesn't physically hurt anyone? If USA jailed the Enron executives, and its President for war crimes trials, then maybe jailing spammers wouldn't be so bad. I hate spam, it pisses me off, but I really don't think jail is appropriate for a crime that causes no physical harm to anyone (except for maybe those penis enlargements that go wrong)
