IngdirectofferThis isn't spam, IMHO, but it's a useful enough offer for those of you readers who are interested in personal finance. We have a number of accounts with ING Direct, a bank of which I am a fan. They regularly have basic savings rates that are higher than anything else I have found.

  • INGDirect gives 4.4% on their Savings and their 12-month CD is 5.1%
  • Praveen points me to with a 5.05% Savings!
  • Kevin says Citibank has competitive rates also with 5.0% but requires a savings and checking out be linked.
  • Emmigrant Direct will do 5.05% also in New York.
  • WAMU will do 5.0% with a checking acount opening.

I like ING Direct because they are always upgrading their login page with new security features and there's no fuss to open an account.

If you sign up at and reference code "CK921/hfbtitdex" (unfortunate code that) then you'll get US$25 free with an initial deposit of US$250. Not too bad if you're looking for a place to move your sock money to.

Disclaimer: ING Direct is NOT a Corillian Customer - I just think they are cool. This offer has nothing to do with Corillian. If you sign up, you get $25 immediately with a $250 deposit and I as an ING Direct Customer get $10. I will take that $10 and buy lunch at Chipotle.

Citibank too offers good savings rate and other banks as Praveen mentioned (5.xx %). The only catch is that usually one has to open a checking account that is linked to the savings acct with the higher rate, and opening and maintaining the accounts is a hassle. ING Direct is good in a way that opening an account with them is very easy and fast, though they have a bit lower savings rate. Anyway, that was my 2 cents. :)

Check out as well. The current rate is 5.25 and requires no checking account. Make sure to select the premier online savings account. They other good thing is that like ING they compound interest daily.

wamu needs a checking account opened(no min balance required though) while HSBC doesn't. Both are large and reputed banks.

Never heard of amboy. Their site looks awefull too.

BTW firsttechcu has a 7 month CD rate of 5.869. Thats a very good rate.

Scott - my sock drawer is a little low right now so how about I just send you a $10 gift certificate to Chipotle. The least I can do for all your tips, tools and tiling demo :-)

This is the best website to find the best banking deals availalbe that I've found; and I recently did an exhaustive search to find good rates since we sold our house and didn't buy a new one yet; I had money that I needed to temporarily invest.

There are plenty of places to find good rates.

What would be truly useful is if someone would create a site that ranks banks (and credit unions) by their Web UI. It's entirely frustrating to sign up for a spiffy new account, only to much later find out that downloading to MSMoney takes, say, 15 clicks.

When I saw the title of the post I actually got a bit excited becaues I was hoping you'd tell us which bank has best implemented the Corillian suite. I hope you might to that in a future post.

hi scott,

i tried opening an account just now and got the following error when I tried the
reference code "CK921/hfbtitdex".

"The reference code you have entered is not in our records. It may have been entered incorrectly or may no longer be a valid promotion. Please double check and correct if necessary. If you are having difficulty you can call an ING DIRECT Sales Associate at 1-888-ING-0727 between 7 AM and 9 PM."

I will try again later.
