imageSince I've been working at Microsoft, I've had a chance to make some new friends. Perhaps you know them?

Come to a VS2008 InstallFest - ask your local MSFT Wonk where yours is - and get a free copy of VS2008Pro. If you've got Beta 2 installed, remove it first.

From TimH: "We're providing a location, install dvd's (these will be evals because the finals aren't pressed yet), and food/drinks.  this will be a good time to get some questions answered, get vs 2008 installed, play around, and hang out with your peers.  each registered and attended individual will receive a special code to receive the fully-licensed visual studio 2008 professional copy sent to them when the full package product is available to ship."

Bring your laptop and install here. No downloading. You'll get a trial version that'll get you through to the final version that will be shipped to you for free. Slick.

Here's the link to the Portland Visual Studio 2008 InstallFest hosted by PADNUG, and there are others all over, and I'm sure more will be announced. I'll try to find a Master List.

imageThe events in the West of the US are:

Register NOW to get your spot ASAP. I'm going to talk to the wife and see if she'll trade me a "night out with the nerds" (as she calls them) for her night out with the girls.

Actually the Denver and Mountain View ones link to the same URL. Don't know if that's on purpose or not.

So what day is the 2008 InstallFest for Guantanamo Bay, CU scheduled for?
November 28, 2007 4:25
Cool! Do you have a link for the Orlando Installfest? I can't seem to find a link to sign up.
November 28, 2007 4:34
Are novice programmers included in this 'installfest'?
November 28, 2007 4:35
@E Weber - Of course, absolutely. Please do join us.
November 28, 2007 4:58
Scott,
I have 2005 on my laptop that I use for my home business and hobbies and I am worried if I overwrite it I will be SOL. Do I have to install the Eval? Can I bring a honking huge non-laptop and install it there?

Can I use Windows 2000? Never found a need for the newer stuff that is slower.
November 28, 2007 5:26
Hey Now Scott,
This event sounds great.
Thx 4 the info,
Catto
November 28, 2007 5:52
I am already running the eval. Do I have to install it there to get a license? I'm willing to uninstall and reinstall if that's really necessary.
November 28, 2007 6:08
I'm pretty sure that you can run 2008 and 2005 side by side, John, so don't worry.

That said, if you show up and register you should get a copy even if you don't technically install that moment.
November 28, 2007 7:33
Is Mt. View full?
I'm getting "An unknown error occurred while processing your request. This is most likely due to a connection failure. Please try again. "

November 28, 2007 18:11
Any East Coast Installfests (New York/Long Island, in my case)?
November 28, 2007 18:19
Anyone have the link for the Pittsburgh InstallFest on 12/11?
November 28, 2007 19:29
I guess there is zero chance of such an event taking place here in Guernsey... I'd be happy to organise one via the Guernsey Software Developer Forum...

Awww. Why does the DC/Nova one have to be out in Reston. These are the times I wish I had a car and/or other nerdy friends with cars.

The Wisconsin .NET Users Group is having one of these install fests too on Dec. 11th and when it was opened up to registration it filled up in 3.5 hours. It's mildly amusing that an event to get VS'08 for .NET 3.5 for free filled up in 3.5 hours. Maybe I'm the only one that finds it amusing....
November 28, 2007 20:57
No San Francisco / North Bay? :(
November 28, 2007 21:14
How about Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati - OH

Huh? Please...we are developers too here!!!!
November 28, 2007 23:07
What about the Vancouver, BC area? Will VS2008 InstallFest come here as well?
November 28, 2007 23:22
More for the "what about us" clamoring: any news on Vancouver, B.C.? Or Seattle for that matter?

November 28, 2007 23:33
Ok, everyone, I'm doing my very best to get a COMPLETE list. I agree that there's not been enough details published and we're trying to fix it. I only had a West Coast list, but I know there are more, so we'll keep trying to update lists.

There's a MUCH larger list here: http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2007/11/27/get-visual-studio-2008-professional-for-free-installfest.aspx

also please keep in mind that these are events that the user groups are sponsoring in conjunction with microsoft. if you are actively involved in an INETA user group you likely already knew about them (or will). why not city XYZ? that answer can vary depending on the location. i will tell you that mostly it is a people resource constraint. our team (the US developer evangelists) is assisting in this for the US (sorry, i can't speak for the other countries and their plans) and we are of but a few people. we are trying to be in as many places as we can be. if you do attend, please make sure that you return the favor and continue (or start) to become involved in the local user group community...and if there isn't one in your area, start one! feel free to ping me with any questions...i'll do my best to answer and alleviate some of it from scott ;-)

I always hear about the good stuff on this blog!!

thank you!!
November 29, 2007 2:17
I think I'm coming, but I'm on the wait list. :(

Even though I have MSDN Access, I'd love to have my own copy. :)
November 29, 2007 12:00
Hey Scott,

as you are now 'in the belly of the beast', is there any way you can determine if there will be ANY install-fests outside of the U.S.?

I know some people have asked about the U.K. above, but I would like to know about Ireland also (as we are not part of the U.K.!)

The blog is great, especially the source code postings (inspired me to head to sourceforge and start looking at some code - at times a humbling or reassuring thing to do!)

Good luck with the new baby

go raibh maith agat!

Hi Scott,

I am from Pakistan and have been developing web portals, etc since years. I would also like to have a LICENSED copy of VS'08. Is there any chance of having this event of Install Fests in Lahore, Pakistan. Would love to join and grab my very own licensed copy of VS '08.

Hope to C U in Lahore, Pakistan :-)

Thank you,

Haroon Ehsan

Hi Scott,
Great initiative. Can anyone let me know how we could do this in Mauritius? We could easily setup an installfest here. It would also be great to get a vs2008.

Shivam

Where is the wait list for Irvine?

Thank you

Hello!

Just would like to inquire if this is also possible to be held in my Country, Philippines. I'd really love to get hold also of my very own VS2008Pro.

Thanks so much!

For any Vancouverites (B.C., not Washington), here's one of our user group's responses from last week (from Medhat Elmasry of .NETBC):

Thanks for letting me know that you are interested. VS.NET 2008 install fests are being organized in every corner of the US at the moment. All I can say is that we are talking with MSDN Canada to help us our organize a similar thing in Canada. You will know about it if and when it matures.

Hrm.

I attended the Reston VA InstallFest last night and was severely underwhelmed. It was literally a stack of CDs, some cold pizza, and tables. People picked up CDs in silence, installed, and left. The only person of authority was sitting in a dark corner playing Halo.

There’s nothing wrong with this – it was exactly as advertised – but I feel like Microsoft missed a big opportunity to engage their early adopters. Get them fired up. Get them talking. Mingling. Sharing successes and failures. My heart aches thinking about what this event could have been.

I would love to hear comments from those in others cities; or this could move to the forums depending on what our fearless leader decides.

Just to let you know InstallFest has caught in Poland as well. Few weeks ago .NET UG in Cracow has organized such event, and in few days we will have InstallFest in Wrocław (Jan, 22nd). Please visit our web page (http://wroc.net.isvclub.com/content/vs2008installfesten.aspx) about InstallFest to get more information.
